2 UNLIMITED
"Real Things"
Byte Records Belgium
Whoever
came up with the theory that pop is dead obviously hadn't reckoned
on 2 Unlimited. The Dutch duo of Anita Dels and Ray Slijngaard are
now on to their tenth hit (largely thanks to Belgian producers Jean
Paul De Coster and Phil Wilde) and "Real Things" is their
third album. Unless you've been living in a cave for the past two
years, the 2 Unlimited formula consists of Slijngaard energetically
rapping over a toytown dance backbeat - seemingly provided by the
Duracell drumming rabbit - with the singalongchoruses coming from
Dels. Sadly, now, of course, the winning formula is wearing
unimaginably thin and Coster/Wilde seem intent on flogging the
ground where the dead horse once lay. Even the classical tinges of
the title track and the watered-down ragga of "Turn Into
Something Wild" seem unlikely to stave off their slippery
descent, but then again, this is techno for toddlers and chances are
anyone else simply doesn't understand.
